Personalized risk assessment at Helix Advanced Medicine combines validated genetic testing with the rest of your file: history, labs (including apoB and lipoprotein(a) when relevant), imaging such as coronary calcium, cancer-screening status, and how you live. A variant can move a colonoscopy earlier, intensify lipid treatment, or warn you off a drug. A variant does not tell you the year you will get a disease, and a negative panel does not make you immune.
What we may test
- Hereditary cancer predisposition panels when personal or family history supports it
- Cardiovascular and lipid genetics when the story looks familial
- Selected neurologic and dementia-risk markers such as ApoE — only after you understand what they can and cannot say
- Pharmacogenetics when it would change a prescription you are likely to need
We order tests that can change a decision. We do not dump raw consumer SNP printouts into the chart and call it precision medicine.
How personalized risk assessment works
- 01Pre-test conversation — what you want to know, what you refuse to know, insurance and privacy, and whether a negative result would falsely reassure you
- 02Choose the panel — medical-grade test matched to the question, not the longest consumer kit
- 03Integrate — genetics + lipids + cancer labs/screening + family tree +, when useful, calcium score or other imaging
- 04Written plan — screening calendar, medication intensity, cascade testing for relatives, and what we will not do
- 05Update — interpretations change; we re-read old reports when guidelines move
What genetics will not do
- Replace colonoscopy, mammography, or evaluation of a lump or bleeding
- Replace VO2 max, grip strength, or blood pressure
- Explain every family history (most diseases are mixed genetic and environmental)
- Let us promise you will avoid cancer, heart attack, or dementia
- Override a drug you need when PGx evidence is weak
