Spirometry is the core office lung-function test. You breathe in fully and blow out hard into a calibrated mouthpiece. The tracing gives FEV1, FVC, and the FEV1/FVC ratio. At Helix Advanced Medicine we perform in-office spirometry, including pre- and post-bronchodilator testing when it is clinically useful.
Office spirometry is not a complete hospital pulmonary function lab. It does not routinely include lung volumes or DLCO testing. If those are required, we refer.
When we order spirometry
- Shortness of breath, wheeze, or chronic cough
- Suspected or known asthma or COPD
- Smoking or vaping history with respiratory symptoms
- Recheck after starting or changing inhalers
